SMHC - Behavioral Health Services Overview
SMHC - Behavioral Health Services Overview
St. Martins originally started as a Day Shelter, a place where homeless people could come and gain protection from the elements. From the beginning it was apparent that many clients needed assistance with everything from intensive case management to psychosocial rehabilitation. The lack of behavioral health services in the area motivated the Board of Directors and the staff to move toward a community-based behavioral health center. It is now New Mexicos largest multi-service provider of services for the homeless and near-homeless.
St. Martin's Behavioral Health Services provide a spectrum of programs. These include:
All of the above services are closely connected with the St. Martin's Day Shelter. In fact, 65% of the clients in SMHC Behavioral Health Services come directly from the Day Shelter, either by referral, outreach, or client initiative. Therefore, a large percentage of the clients in all the above programs are initially homeless, mentally ill, substance abusing and, perhaps, involved with the forensic system. All too often the mentally ill are released directly to the streets from state or community psychiatric hospitals or jail with little or no follow-up.
Each component of the Behavioral Health Services is designed to assess and secure basic physical, mental health and social services for clients, and designed with the intention of bringing about the highest level of self-sufficiency and independent living for its participants.
St. Martin's Continuum of Care is organized into three tiers, to meet the needs of homeless and near-homeless people at every stage of their journey to self-sufficiency and community integration:
